Professor of Viola and Deputy Chair of the Orchestral Department at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music
Dr. Liu Liyuan is a prominent Chinese violist and educator. She is Associate Professor of Viola and Deputy Chair of the Orchestral Department at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, where she also serves as Deputy Dean of the Chamber Music Institute and a graduate advisor.
Dr. Liu holds degrees from the Juilliard School (B.A. & M.M., full scholarship) and earned her Doctorate in Music Education from Columbia University, where she was a Morse Scholar. She is a first prize winner of the New York International Young Artist Concerto Competition.
As a soloist, she has performed at Carnegie Hall, premiered Gong Tianpeng’s Viola Concerto with the Shanghai Philharmonic, and released albums including Baroque Journey on the Viola and Colors from China. She has also appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and founded the Fenghua Viola Ensemble, featured on CCTV.
Dr. Liu regularly collaborates with major orchestras including the New York Concerto Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic, and Central Opera Orchestra. She is widely recognized for her expressive artistry, rich tone, and technical mastery.
