A Life Devoted to Music
From early childhood, Payam’s passion for the cello has been the guiding force of his artistic journey, shaping his identity as a musician to this day.
His musical development flourished under the mentorship of Thomas Grossenbacher and Rafael Rosenfeld, two of Switzerland’s most esteemed cellists. Under their insightful guidance at the Zurich University of the Arts and the University of Music FHNW Basel, he refined his technique, deepened his musical expression, and cultivated a distinctive artistic voice.
Even during his studies, the call of the concert stage was irresistible. As an intern with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, he experienced the profound power of orchestral playing before joining the Basel Symphony Orchestra as a permanent member. There, he laid the foundation for his profound understanding of sound aesthetics and ensemble culture.
His belief in the unifying power of music finds expression in the West- Eastern Divan Orchestra, an ensemble dedicated to peace and dialogue. As associate principal cellist, he carries this vision to the world’s great concert halls, embodying music’s ability to bridge divides.
Alongside his performing career, sharing knowledge and nurturing talent have become integral to his artistic mission. In 2020, he joined the faculty of the Zakhar Bron School of Music in Zurich, mentoring young musicians on their path. In 2025, he was appointed professor at the Haute école des arts du Rhin in Strasbourg.
A sought-after pedagogue and juror, he is regularly invited as an examiner at the University of Music FHNW Basel and conducts masterclasses in Austria and Turkey, imparting his experience to the next generation.
For Payam, music is not merely a profession but a calling—a universal language that transcends boundaries and unites people. His playing, distinguished by both emotional depth and technical brilliance, reflects this philosophy, making him a highly respected musician and teacher whose passion continues to inspire.
