Double bassist Ruslan Lutsyk was born in Lviv, one of the cultural centers of Ukraine. He studied at the S. Kruchelnytska Specialized Music School in Lviv and graduated cum laude from the Mykola Lysenko Lviv State Academy of Music. He later completed postgraduate studies with Klaus Trumpf at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.
Since 2002 he has been a member of the Philharmonia Zürich (Zurich Opera Orchestra), serving as Assistant Principal Double Bass since 2004. As a soloist he has performed with orchestras in Germany, Ukraine and Switzerland and has collaborated with renowned conductors including Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
Since 2008 he has been Professor of Double Bass at the Bern University of the Arts and regularly gives masterclasses internationally.
